African American Lives:


DVD with Two Media Presentations and 24-page Guide:

Shirley A. Page has taught school in Philadelphia for 43 years. In "Aunt Shirley's Trunk" (26 minutes) she shares her trunk full of things she's saved and the stories that go with them. She provides a model for any individual or group to "pack up" their own memories.

"The Faith of Dr. Samuel Proctor" (25 minutes) is based on his book, The Substance of Things Hoped For: A Memoir of African American Faith. When Dr. Proctor was asked why he wrote his book, he responded, "I want to leave blacks with hope, courage, and inspiration. I want to leave others with a sense of understanding and appreciation for who we are and what we've done." We believe he succeeded.

"You Oughta Have An Auto!" provides a chronology of the automobile in America. Farm Days:

"Morning Chores and Other Times Remembered by Hadley Read." Put to music and illustrated with images. In “The Fifties, Family-Style” the decade is explored through news photos and family photos. The segments are drawn together through narration and the sounds of the fifties that go along with the images. The Home Front:

Enjoy "Tuning Into the Sixties" with 42 minutes of images and narration in five segments. You can choose any of four shows by clicking on the TV Guide cover featuring JFK, War, Science, or Justice. Or choose the fifth option: click on Surfing and get a taste of sports, kids, fashion, music, food, movies, alternative programming, and, of course, some sponsors of that decade. You can always expect English captions for those who are deaf or hearing-impaired, but now, for the first time, you can also choose Spanish subtitles.

The kit materials are based on what people have said or remembered about spring. Nearly the entire narration for the media presentation is made up of quotations. It begins, "Don't you find yourself thinking spring thoughts long before there is any real let-up of winter's harshness?" Colorful "Spring Thoughts" pop up from then on to accompany current and historical photos. Some are in spring colors, others in black-and white. The 15 minute DVD has subtitles.
